There are several types of heating. Each type of heating has its own special nuances. Steam, Hot Water, and
Forced Air are the main types.
There are several ways of creating the heat also. Gas, Oil, Wood, and Coal fired are some of the older ways.
Electric Element, Heat Pumps, Solar, and Geo Thermal are a few of the newer ways of creating hot water.
Residential - Commercial - Industrial
Just in Steam Heating a few of the different system types are single pipe, two pipe, vacuum, down feed,
high pressure, and low pressure. Single pipe systems have special types of vents on the radiators which allow
the steam to get to the radiators and the condensate water to return through the same pipe. They also have
vents on the main pipes in the basement.

Hot Water Heating
Hot Water Heating also comes in sever types and forms. There are
different ways of heating the water and different ways to deliver that
In methods of delivery the old fashioned cast iron radiators are my
favorite but there is also cast iron baseboard, finned tube baseboard,
modern European styles that look like vertical blinds or towel bars, sub-
floor radiant using pex tubing, and more.
Some systems can be gravity fed and others are force fed or pumped.
There are systems with antifreeze or glycol mixed with the water for better
efficiency. Condensing boilers, solar thermal, and geo thermal are newer
types of boilers that are also highly efficient.
Warm Air Furnaces
Just like Hot Water Heating, Warm Air Furnace type heaters come in different
types and forms with different ways of heating the air and different delivery
Two of the main types of furnaces are gravity, and forced air. With Warm Air
there must be some type of wall, floor, or ceiling openings to allow the movement
of air and in most cases the openings are covered with registers.
These registers come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, materials, and colors. There
are also methods of construction that allow the air to move naturally so less
openings are needed to be covered with registers.
Also just like water, some of the newer types of Warm Air are high efficiency
Condensing Furnaces, Geo, and Solar Thermal. Keith installed a Wood Burning
Fireplace Insert that blows Warm Air in his home.
