This is a backup!
A clogged fixture drain is different from a backup. If the lowest fixture on that same stack as described
above is clogged, that one lowest fixture would not drain but everything else would drain just fine. Other sinks
draining into the stack would not backup into the clogged sink.
Most of the time when a drain can be unclogged by using a plunger, the clog was just in the fixture drain.
You need to be careful using a plunger because you can push the clog into a main drain or main stack and cause
the problem in the photos. Many times even small fixture drains need to be machine cleaned.

A backup is a clog in a main drain or main stack. Water backs up into the fixture when water is used or
flushed in some other fixture. What actually comes up in the fixture depends on what type of drain it is and what
other fixtures are on the branches up stream from the clog. If a stack has all kitchen sinks or laundry drains and a
blockage is caused at the base of the stack then the lowest fixture (Kitchen Sink or Laundry Tub) above the clog
will get everything from the drains above backing up into that lowest fixture.
Natural bacteria that eats grease, soap scum, and the muck that builds up in drains.

Do You Have a clogged drain or a backup?
In one month last year we had three customers that were referred to us after two or three separate
contractors, one being a national brand name, could not clear the drain. These customers were told that
they had broken drain pipes under ground that would need to be excavated and replaced. We were able
to clear all three drains with no problem. If you have the same experience PLEASE give us a call. We
may be able to save you thousands of dollars.
Often this happens when drain cleaning people cannot figure out how to
clear a drain. The easiest thing for them to do is to tell you that you have a
broken pipe and that it needs to be excavated and replaced. Sometimes this is
due to the drain cleaners inexperience or because they are under time
constraints and other times it is a contractor being less than honest in an
attempt to make more money.
Sometimes the pipe is completely collapsed and truly does need to be
excavated and replaced. Other times the pipe is cracked and shifted so much
that it is impossible to get a snake through to clear the blockage and again must
Often the pipe is cracked and slightly shifted but not very bad which, if
properly maintained, could last for many more years. In many cases, especially
with cast iron or terracotta pipe, the pipe is shifted at a joint and not broken at
all. Get a Video Drain Inspection!
Sometimes roots grow through the joints and cause a blockage. Roots can
crack the strongest pipes and eventually cause a pipe to collapse if not properly
maintained the same as roots can crack and push up concrete blocks in the
